Anne Hathaway Channels the Roaring '20s
Anne Hathaway’s dress may have been modern, but her hair at the premiere The Class at The New York Film Festival, was straight out of the roaring ‘20s. Her hair was pulled back save for a soft, undulating wave pressed along one side of her face. The dramatic style was known in its heyday as a Marcel Wave. Who the hell is Marcel, you ask?read more

The Hair Biz Stands up Despite a Down Economy
One of the fun things about doing guest television appearances for the networks is getting your hair and make-up done by professionals. Most of the stylists are solo entrepreneurs so in addition to picking up tricks of the trade from them, I also like to ask: "How's business?" Does the beauty business hold its own in a sluggish economy? Most say, "So far so good." The reason they say, is because typically their customers aren't living paycheck to paycheck so they aren't likely to skimp on personal care services. To further my research from the network make-up chair, I asked my friend Pete, who owns several salons and has been in the industry for more than 35 years. He concurred with my findings. However, he noted that some customers may stretch the time in between salon visits a little longer when times are tight. For example, if you regularly book salon appointments every four weeks, you might decide to go every five weeks instead. My informal research reflects the national data on the salon-industry's vitality. There are some 75,000 beauty salons in the expanding beauty business – a $16 billion industry. When you add an additional 5,000 men's hair salons and barber shops to the picture; hair care and personal services equals a lot of small business jobs! |
Hair cutting is quickly becoming a “do-it-yourself” endeavor for the cash-conscious—and the results aren’t so pretty, the Wall Street Journal reports. Hairdressing “may look easy, but it's not,” said the head of a cosmetology group, who notes that mid-range and high-priced salons have taken a hit. Some 72% of 600 polled salons had seen customer spending fall as of January, a survey said.
There’s good news for the hair-cutting industry, though: Sales of high-tech barbering devices are up. And as people cut their own tresses, they make plenty of mistakes, requiring professional fix-up jobs. “I've seen women come in, crying hysterically” after hair-cutting fumbles, says a hairdresser. "It's a big deal,” and it can reap big bucks: One salon charges some 50% more for corrective hair coloring.

Congress’s hair salon not only has a new owner, manager and stylists — it’s got new gadgets.
Over August recess, the salon’s new and veteran stylists huddled in a corner of the Cannon House Office Building with a representative from Goldwell hair products, learning about a tool that could take Congress’s hair by storm.
The “Colormat,” used to apply color to hair, has a long, cylindrical shape, reminiscent of the oversized pencils given as prizes at county fairs.
“I could probably be in a house of nuns and they’d still think this was a dirty toy,” the representative for the company, Katie Woolridge, joked as the room filled with laughter.
The joke lent the class a moment of lighthearted fun in what was otherwise a two-hour intensive seminar on everything from how pH levels affect hair cuticles to customer-relations tips like remembering if a client’s dog is sick.
Vincent Marvaso won the contract for Congress’s salon in June, and stylist education like the course with the Colormat is just one of the changes he is bringing with him in his effort to revamp the decades-old salon and make it a Capitol Hill destination once again.
